Introduction

This video will present an overview of the single quad electronics. We will discuss the main electronic circuit boards and their primary functions. These boards include the Local user interface or Louie, the Smart Card , the Side board, the Main board , Log Amp and power supplies.

Smart Card

The smart card is the main controller for the mass spectrometer. It is an off the shelf generic CPU that has been customized for the instrument. THe smart card provides the main interface with the PC through an ethernet cable. The Smart card also connects to the Main board, the Local user interface as well as connections to the ion gauge and CI flow module.

Some of the The smart card connections can be accessed from the back of the instrument. These include remote start - stop cable, the local area network cable and two RS-232 connections.

Side Board

The side board is attached to the analyzer. It provides the RF voltage, plus U and minus U voltage to the Quads, filament emission and energy as well as the EMV power supply.

Mainboard and Log Amp

The Main board provides quad and detector voltages to the side board as well as filament voltages. Mounted on the mainboard is the Log Amp board. The main board provides circuitry and power supply for temperature control.

The Log amp board provides conversion of the input current from the multiplier into digital format using an A to D converter.

Power supplies

There are also several power supplies in the E module. These include a low voltage DC power supply, an AC distribution board, a HED power supply and a Toroid AC to AC transformer.

The low voltage power supply include a plus and minus 15 volts, 24 volts and a 5 volt supply.

Underneath the manifold is the turbo power supply. This provides the turbo 24 Volts. Also connected through the turbo supply is a power to the Ion gauge.

AC Board

The AC distribution board is where the line voltage connects. It also provides voltage to the toroid and foreline pump. A relay on the AC board must be energized in order for the rotary pump to receive power. The AC board provides signal connectors and control of the turbo and diffusion pumps. The power connecter for the diffusion and turbo pump also originates on the AC board.

HED Power Supply

The H E D power supply supplies the high voltage for the Dynode in the detector. It also provides the voltage to the DIF. THe H E D power supply is color coded. Unipoloar supply is yellow. The bipolor supply is blue.
