Overview

In this video you will learn how to configure a GC MS instrument in the chemstation or mass hunter program. This includes updating the firmware, knowing what files are copied and the general file structure.

Configuring and instrument

To launch the configuration manager, click on the configuration manager icon on the descktop.

First, enter a name for the instrument. Next select the type for the mass spectrometer and then type in it's I P address. Select the GC type and it's I P address as well. Select the Data Analysis type from the dropdown menu.

Click on the OK button to close the configuration manager. Select "yes" to the prompt for confirming if you would like to proceed with the instrument configuration. After selecting "yes, the software copies default tune files and methods. If the methods exist they are overwritten.

The Configuration manager will create two icons on your desktop. The first is a short cut to the instrument with the same name as typed into the "instrument name" field. The second is a short cut to the data analysis program. You can configure up to 4 instruments in the configuration manager. However, you can only run 2 two instruments at one time.

Updating Firmware and other Utilities

The configuration manager also provides you a convenient way to update the mass spectrometer's firmware. To do this, re-open the configuration manager and select the desired instrument. From the Help menu, select the "check network and update firmware" menu item. The software will then automatically ping the M S, check that the necessary files exist, and then proceed with the firmware update.

The current PC's network configuration can be shown from this program by selecting "Help" and then the "network information menu item. Shown is the information similar to running I P config slash all from a command prompt.

Another option under the help menu is to view the reivision history of the software.

File Structure

When an instrument is configured, a file structure is created under the instrument directory. In chemstation, the instrument directory is the M S D chem folder. In Mass hunter the instrument directory is named "Mass Hunter". For the designated instrument index, another subdirectory is created with the instrument number one to four. Under the instrument number folder, several other folders are created. These include a folder with the M S model number. For a 5975 this folder will be called 5975.

Under the folder with the same name as the instrument type, the default tune files are added. These include S tune dot U, A tune dot U and others. If the files had existed prior to opening the configuration, they will be overwritten.

The method folder is also created under the folder with the same name as the instrument index. This folder contains the default dot m method and all the checkout methods including ofn SN method.

The configuration process copies all the default tunes and methods from the folder under the M S D chem folder called M S setup. The software looks for a subfolder with the same name as the instrument type and copies all the files from it.
