When I start system control, I get a windows application error.  The program terminates.

Can you send me a copy of the error?  If the error details reflects the USB communication it could be the MS, PC or cable.  To narrow it down, try a different PC.  If the error persists, it is most likely a problem with the Controller board on the MS.

Go the Star Tool bar of MS Workstation.  "right click" on the tool bar (where there is no buttons) and select "enable-disable instrument modules".  Find the 240 MS, and disable it.  See if you can open system control

Yes that worked.  Does that confirm problem is in the MS?

Yes,  more than likely this a bad controller PWA on the MS. This handles all the communication with PC and is the 'brains' of the MS.  The only other item it might be is the USB cable.  However, in my experience, these have a very low failure rate.

Part can be found here http://support.arclabs.net/kit-2404000500-controller-pwa-replacement
